Program Educational Goals


  • Gain and demonstrate an understanding of foundational economic principles.
  • Enhance critical thinking skills by using economic concepts and models to explain economic behavior and outcomes, to evaluate policy impact, and to propose solution strategies.
  • Develop quantitative reasoning by using advanced econometrics and mathematical optimization techniques to construct and solve models, assess solutions, interpret data, and critique empirical research.
  • Communicate effectively about economic ideas, issues, and analyses.
  • Understand and evaluate economic events and economic policy.

University Requirements:


Economics Major Requirements:


Applicability of transfer coursework to Lerner majors: Coursework at the ECON 100-level or higher may be transferred from AACSB-accredited institutions or institutions offering a BA or BS degree in economics only unless credit is earned through an approved articulation agreement or approved study abroad program.

All other coursework at the 300-level or higher may be transferred from AACSB-accredited institutions only unless credit is earned through an approved articulation agreement or approved study abroad program. Courses at the 100- and 200-level (except for ECON101 and ECON103) may be transferred from any institution following UD’s standard transfer credit policy.

Only one transfer course may apply toward the ECON electives requirement.  The department does not grant transfer equivalency for 400-level ECON courses.

Intermediate core theory courses (ECON300, ECON301, ECON303, ECON304, and ECON306) must be completed at the University of Delaware.

Major Breadth Requirements:


Courses used to fulfill the University Breadth Requirement above may also be used to fulfill the Major Breadth Requirements. Courses used to satisfy Major Breadth Requirements may also be used to satisfy major requirements. Minimum grade C- required for all courses used to satisfy the Major Breadth Requirements.

  • Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of Creative Arts and Humanities
  • Nine credits representing at least two subject areas, including cross-lists, of History and Cultural Change (ECON 315  and ECON 316  may apply)
  • Three credits of Social and Behavioral Sciences (cannot be satisfied by an ECON course, including cross-lists)
  • Four credits of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology (at least one course must have an associated laboratory). Cannot be satisfied by courses satisfying the Mathematics & Statistics requirement. Acceptable courses for satisfying the laboratory requirement include:

Second Writing Requirement:


Second Writing Requirement  approved by the College of Arts and Sciences. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours, completed with a minimum grade of C-, and the section enrolled must be designated as satisfying the requirement in the academic term completed. Courses used to satisfy the second writing requirement may also be used to satisfy major requirements.
