Program Educational Goals

A. Linguistic Proficiency / Communication Skills: Students will function in Spanish (speaking, writing, listening, and reading) and Brazilian Portuguese (speaking, listening, and informational reading).

  • Students will be able to read and summarize in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Students will demonstrate comprehension of extended speech in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, and follow more complex lines of argument when the topic is reasonably familiar.
  • Students will be able to function in interactions where they may need to request resources where Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese is spoken.

B. Cultural Understanding / International Experience: Students will demonstrate understanding of cultural practices, products, and perspectives in Spanish-speaking culture(s) and in Brazil.

  • To the extent that it is practical, students will be able to reflect on their experience with Spanish- and Brazilian Portuguese-speaking cultures, thus gaining new perspectives on their own culture as well. This will ideally occur through study abroad and/or community engagement.
  • Students will be able to interact in most Spanish-speaking cultures, and in Brazil, in a socially appropriate register in a variety of settings: with a host family, peers, as a traveler.
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of cultural and social norms in Spanish-speaking culture/s and in Brazil.

C. Appreciation of World Literatures: Students will analyze and interpret literature, film, or other sources in Spanish, and understand functional texts in Brazilian Portuguese.

  • Students will be able to read longer texts like short stories and simple novels and understand most of the main ideas, guessing the meaning of new words from context.
  • Students will be able to briefly summarize a text/source, describe important themes, and explain the role and meaning of music, literature, art and other artistic expressions in Spanish-speaking cultures.
  • Students will relate textual elements to relevant cultural, historical, ideological, and aesthetic contexts in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Students will demonstrate comprehension of diverse non-fictional and informational texts (instructions, signage, news items, menus, social media) in Brazilian Portuguese.
